We are looking at Spain and the origins of the Spanish language (Castellano). Before Spain was united under Ferdinand and Isabella's rule in 1492, it was a group of smaller kingdoms, each with its own language. Ferdinand and Isabella decided to unite their empire with a single language, Castellano (the language of Castilla in the center of Spain) and a single religion, Catholicism. Tensions have always existed between the different regions and the central government of Spain, culminating recently with Catalonia holding a referendum for independence from Spain. This was put down violently by the Spanish government. Different regions of Spain still speak their own regional languages and dialects although Spanish (Castellano) is the official language of Spain. Some of the main ones include:
Catalán (Catalan) - spoken in Catalonia, the East coast around Barcelona
Gallego (Gallecian) - spoken in the Northwest of Spain
Asturleonés (Asturian) - spoken in the North of Spain
Euskera (Basque) - spoken in the North of Spain
